Opportunities exist on many levels for people to get involved in the organisation and running of the event. If you know of anyone who would be willing to be involved—at any level—please let us know. Working with SYG is a very rewarding experience.
An event the size of SYG cannot run without a large number of volunteers across a numbers of levels. For this reason, we require each group to contribute in some capacity to helping us out on the weekend. Volunteers must be over the age of 18.
Group Coordinators – The Group Coordinator for each church plays an important role coordinating their group’s registration and being the point of communication with State Youth Games. As Group Coordinator, you are also responsible for the care and supervision of all your group members. Group Coordinators receive a discount in SYG fees (maximum 2 GC’s registered per Church).
Other Leaders – We recommend working within a team of other leaders from your church group who can also help make the Games a success. It is important that the leadership team you bring with your group are responsible and facilitate an environment of safe care for the young people in your group. The Churches of Christ has a code of practice for the protection of children. All groups are to be aware of the code and to follow it. Copies are available from the Conference of Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania (9488 8800) or you can download it here. So that we have an accurate account of everyone at SYG, please ensure all your leaders (including cooks, drivers, etc) are listed on your group’s registration.
Sport Coordinators – Our greatest need is finding volunteers willing to coordinate sports over the SYG weekend. All groups are required to supply some Sport Coordinators, approximately 1 Coordinator per 10 registrations. Eg, 15 people registered = 1 Sport Coordinator, 40 people registered = 4 Sport Coordinators. The benefits of being a sport coordinator are cheaper registration, free SYG top, and bonus points for your group.
First Aid Volunteers – St Johns will be available at most of the major venues. However, it’s important that we have a list of First Aid Volunteers (Level 2 minimum) if assistance is needed outside sport times and at smaller locations. If anyone in your group is Level 2 First Aid qualified and are willing to be on standby, please provide their name and number as part of your registration.
Marshals – Volunteers are needed to marshal Cross Country, Mountain Bike Riding, and Swimming. Each group is required to nominate at least one marshal for each of these events in which you have competitors.
Security Contacts – Safety and security is of utmost importance while on SYG. As such, each group is required to appoint at least one Security Coordinator for your team. This person will be the main contact if there is a security issue on or near your campsite over the weekend. More details on this role will be provided closer to the weekend. Also, if you have a number of people in your group (helpers and/or parents) who could assist with security at the Evening Programs and the Village, we’d love to hear from you. Bonus points are on offer! Please contact Jarrod Risson (email@example.com or 0410 560 282) if you are able to help in this way.
Umpires – Most team sport require that each team participating supplies an umpire for a few games in which they are not playing. The roster for this is listed alongside the team draws. Other sports will need badged umpires (netball, basketball, badminton, touch football, and indoor soccer). If your group has anyone who is qualified to help us out in these sports, please list them on your registration. They must be available for the whole session, and cannot play sport in that session.
